I've been aiming at associating Stanley Kubrick's The Shining (movie) with J Dilla's The Shining (LP) for as long as I can remember I'm really glad I finally did. Although the latter not being the most recognized work of Dilla as it is for Kubrick, they're both insanely great. I remember first hearing Dilla's Shining while living in snowy Montreal, it immediately became a soundtrack associated to the harsh wintery season, while being very heartwarming at the same time…
Every track is amazing, with an atmosphere that actually carries the movie's legacy, voices increasing the mystery too…From Pharaohe Monch to Common, Guilty Simpson to Busta Rhymes, it feels like Dilla being surrounded with his crew for sure.
I knew I wanted Dilla to be on a cart like Danny is in the movie, wandering through the hotel and confronting the tenebrous memories there, but while doing my researches about both subjects, I learned that the Stanley hotel, which served as the main inspiration behind Stephen King's book, was used as a retreat place to those with pulmonary tuberculosis.
Having in mind that Dilla's LP was crafted while Dilla being at hospital, it just made perfect sense to have him wander through the hotel like Danny, with a cart full of records, a record player and an SP 303, which he made the instrumentals with.
My personal favorite of the LP being Common's "So far to go", I choose to put on the forefront the Isly Brothers' record "Don't say goodnight", as it contains the main sample of the track.
