Lately I've been listening a lot to my old Public Enemy cassettes, and while it'd been a while since I knew I wanted to do a PE print, I wasn't quite sure what to do until I had a discussion about the movie Do The Right Thing, which had all planets aligned.
Since I knew that the video for Public Enemy's "Fight The Power" had been directed by Do The Right Thing writer Spike Lee, and that the song was commissioned by Spike Lee for the movie I thought it'd be very cool to have the cast of the movie actually star in the video for the song, as they both took place in Brooklyn during the same year.
The video being a protest march in the Brooklyn streets, I had all PE members marching along the iconic characters of Do The Right Thing, hand in the air or holding boards. There you'll see Radio Raheem,Mother Sister, The Mayor, Mister Senor Love Daddy, Buggin'Out walking along Clifton in what seems rather good terms, Sal and Pino, Tina, Mookie (Spike Lee), Smiley and of course Chuck D, Flavor Flav, Terminator X, Professor Griff and the S1Ws.
To make the crowd bigger and a bit more realistic while not taking too much space I added a few people, and as I wanted another girl in there I added a young Rhapsody, marching on the front in a kind nod to her presence in the 2020 remix of the track, as well as Pete Rock appearing as an guest of honor, holding a political "Shut'em down"
board, just as the song by Public Enemy he remixed.
