Wether you're a Hip Hop enthusiast or a Stones Throw Records fan, you've probably seen the amazing documentary on the Los Angeles based record label that came out around 2014. With introduction by one of my favorite current MC, Jonwayne, and travelling through the horizons of such likes of Doom, Dilla (RIP), Madlib, Mayer Hawthorne and others, the documentary left a strong feeling of how music, this music in particular, is a true work of art.
I'd been wanting to work on a print for a long time but only recently did I feel the elements were starting to assemble with each other. I did want to put a record player but I didn't feel like putting a Technics MK2 for some reason…too serious, not colorful as the label is (the guys, the videos, the merch & the creativity) and somehow I got to think this label is one for my generation, the 30-40some year olds who lived through the golden era of Hip Hop and search for labels that still give those goosebumps.
That's how I came to choose a Fischer Price phonograph. Now, you'll probably notice the Hieroglyphics sticker upon it amongst other things. I wanted to pay tribute to Stones Throw while adding the legendary team of Oakland as I consider them the fathers of Left Coast Hip Hop, and the 2 labels worked together many times, notably on the incredibly good One Big Trip Lp (if you haven't listened to it yet, pick yourself a copy).
