The Police Academy series actually hasn't aged that bad if you look close enough. Of course it is straight from the 80s, the family / easy-going humor is typical from that era.
Now, it happens that Police Academy shares references that are still very relevant in today's indy culture. The Bones Brigade (skateboard brand Powell-Peralta's crew) is one of them : wilding in the streets are pro skateboarders Lance Mountain, Tony Hawk, Mike McGill and others are still skateboarding today (Lance Mountain just released a very nice part in the Nike SB Chronicles'3 video at age 51…), and skateboarding hasn't been any bigger.
Another hit in today's indy culture is the Nike Air Jordan, which had been introduced 2 years earlier in 1985. This is an actual and interesting detail, back then these shoes didn't leave the shelves that much, and skateboarders used them as a cheap buy, yet strong and supporting shoe.
Now, skateboarding does destroy shoes, especially on the ollie side, and outsoles…And I wouldn't have been true to the movie (and sport) without putting this detail in my design.
